Farsley Celtic were denied a first home win of the season in dramatic fashion, as Spennymoor Town struck twice at the death to snatch a point at the Citadel.

Earlier, goals from Frank Mulhern and Dave Syers had set Farsley on their way for what seemed to be a relatively comfortable three points, before Danny Greenfield and Glen Taylor had other ideas.

Farsley, strengthened by the return of Jimmy Spencer and Kian Scales, started on the front foot, and would take the lead inside five minutes.

Luke Parkin played an excellent ball through to Frank Mulhern who, as he attempted to round Max Metcalfe, was felled by the Moors’ shot-stopper.

Mulhern dusted himself down and made no mistake from the spot to convert his second penalty of the season.

The Celts’ fast start seemed to stun their managerless visitors, who soon found themselves two goals behind.

Kian Scales drove through the Moors’ defence and saw his strike parried by Metcalfe, but Dave Syers was the quickest to react as he tucked away on the follow-up.

Spennymoor would start to find their feet after their slow start, and would have halved the deficit but for an outstanding double-save from Max Dearnley.

The Farsley ‘keeper was quickly off his line to superbly deny Rob Ramshaw, before recovering to deny Jordan Thewlis.

However, it would be the hosts who looked most like scoring, and the game could have been out of sight by the break.

Shortly after the half-hour mark, there was a scramble in the Spennymoor box with Jimmy Spencer at the centre, the returning forward somehow not being able to turn the ball home as the visitors scrambled the ball off the line.

And then Scales had a golden opportunity, sent racing through on goal by a superbly-weighted ball from Mulhern, only to be denied by Metcalfe who this time came out on top when one-on-one.

After the break, the pace of the game would slow, with Farsley unable to get in behind their hosts as frequently as they had in the first.

But the opportunities would still arrive, Dave Syers denied by a finger-tip save from Metcalfe, before Tom Allan had a header cleared off the line.

Spennymoor then fired a warning shot to the Celts as Mark Anderson came inches away from pulling a goal back, the substitute curling a delightful effort onto the crossbar.

With five minutes remaining they would set up a grandstand finish, another substitute, Danny Greenfield, firing home across goal and into the bottom corner from outside the box.

With the wind in their sails, the visitors went searching for the equaliser, and with just two minutes of normal time remaining, would come up trumps.

Bobby Johnson was adjudged to have brought down Jordan Thewlis in the box, with Dearnley unable to save a fourth penalty of the season as Glen Taylor converted.

It was a tough blow for Farsley a side who were just minutes away from a second win of the season, and have now dropped six points from winning positions in the final five minutes of games.
