Ben Atkinson was Farsley’s Bank Holiday Hero as his stoppage time winner secured a dramatic 2-1 victory at Warrington Town.
Despite the perfect ending to the game, the match had a disastrous start from Farsley’s perspective with Mikey O’Neill putting Warrington ahead after just five minutes.
Debutant Cole Hyde levelled the scores mid-way through the second half with a really well worked team goal before Atkinson secured a memorable victory with just a few minutes to go.
Farsley were slow out the traps and a defensive lapse allowed O’Neill the chance to slot past Dylan Ombang, which he duly did to put the hosts ahead just a few minutes in.
Despite a couple of bright plays from DJ Campton-Sturridge, Bailey Sloane and Hyde, the Celts struggled to threaten Dan Atherton in the Warrington goal during the first half.
And Farsley were relived to not go into the break further down as Bailey Murphy picked out Connor Woods but from a narrow angle he shot just across the far post in the final minute of the first half.
Thankfully the game opened up a little and the Celts started to show signs of promise just before the hour mark, with Atherton forced into a save after Danny Greenfield had got on the end of Sloane’s cross.
Parity was restored on the 65th minute through an excellently worked move. Sam Fielding picked out an brilliant outside of the foot pass to get the ball to Hyde, with the 18-year-old former Barnsley youngster coolly finishing first time into the bottom corner.
Substitute Robbie Fox offered a change of style for Farsley and he almost put his side ahead but Atherton produced a strong save to keep out the forward’s left foot strike.
However the Celt Army produced a moment of magic as they game entered stoppage time – Ben Atkinson picking up the ball on the edge of the box before firing goalwards – the shot being spilled by Atheton into his own net for Atkinson’s fourth goal of the season.
Farsley finish the day in sixth place in the Vanarama National League North after securing the third win of the campaign. Next up is Saturday’s trip to Derbyshire for a meeting with Alfreton Town.
