Farsley Celtic secured their National League North status with a dominant 2-0 win over Buxton at The Citadel on the final day of the 2023/24 season
Farsley Celtic clinched their National League North survival at The Citadel with a massive 2-0 win over Buxton.
Farsley started the game strongly by throwing numbers forward in search of the opening goal, knowing the importance of the occasion, and they were rewarded after ten minutes when Tom Allan volleyed home. What a time to score your first of the season!
The Celts kept banging on the door, searching for a second as Michael Coulson and Ryan Watson went close with blocked efforts ten minutes later.
Coulson was ever-present throughout the afternoon with Buxton’s defence unable to cope, and he almost doubled the lead when his half-volley flew just over from the edge of the area.
The second half was a similar story to the first, with it being one-way traffic, and Farsley were rewarded with their second when Isaac Assenso backheeled in from inside of the box.
With this goal, and with Blyth Spartans 5-1 down to Brackley Town, the celebrations began to brimmer inside of the Citadel with Farsley edging closer to survival.
Clayton Donaldson came agonisingly close to securing Farsley’s third on the hour mark, when Coulson battled down the right before finding Ben Atkinson, who layed the ball off to Donaldson whose first time effort came off the post.
Buxton tried to find a way back into the match, however they were met by the resistance of the Farsley defence and goalkeeper Zan-luk Leban who fought to keep the clean sheet.
Eventually, the final whistle came, sparking wild scenes as supporters invaded the pitch to celebrate with the players after the Celts clinched survival on the final day for the third season in a row.
