Farsley Celtic face Buxton at The Citadel on the final day of the 2023/24 season with the Celts locked in a tight relegation battle

It’s a fixture that will have massive implications for Farsley, with the Celts currently occupying the final relegation spot in the National League North, level on points with Blyth Spartans on 50, however the north east outfit have the superior goal difference.

The task is clear. Farsley have to better Blyth’s result on Saturday or we will face relegation to the Northern Premier League, five years on from winning promotion from the seventh tier.

Both sides have been given home fixtures, with Farsley facing the already mentioned Buxton, whilst Blyth have the tougher fixture on paper as they host play-off certs Brackley Town who will be looking for a positive result to cement their place in third.

Farsley come into the fixture off the back of a 3-1 defeat away at Blackwell Meadows to Darlington where despite a late goal from Ben Atkinson to make it 2-1, the home side went onto score again, claiming the three points and securing their survival in the division for at least another season.

Speaking on the Darlington result, Conor Branson said: “I didn’t think there was much in the game to be honest. We felt comfortable in the first half and dealt with their threats, but conceded from a set piece early in the second half and then we were chasing the game.”

On the feeling in the dressing room going into the final game, Branson said: “We’re up for it! Obviously confidence has been low of late, but I think form goes out of the window going into the final game.”

TEAM NEWS

Farsley were reinforced with the return of Isaac Assenso at Darlington, and will welcome back another defender in Tom Allan for the final match after he served a three match suspension. Chris Atkinson was forced to start from the bench last weekend, whilst Lewis Turner missed out entirely. All three are expected to be fit. The Celts will be without defenders Rudy Misambo and George Smith however.

BUXTON

According to Buxton social media assistant Elliot Steadman, the Bucks have endured an inconsistent season which has plagued the teams’ attempt to break into the National League North play-offs. After finishing 11th last season in their first campaign in the league, Buxton have slipped to 14th in the 2023/24 season. Injuries have been a large issue at stages, with the team sometimes only having 14 players available. However with it being their second season in the division, consolidation is a success, and Craig Elliot’s side retained the Derbyshire Senior Cup in midweek, meaning he has ended his time with the club with another trophy.

LAST TIME OUT

The Celts recorded a big three points in the last time the two sides met, after Farsley came from one behind to win 2-1 at The Silverlands Stadium thanks to goals from Ryan Watson and Darren Stephenson back in November. Farsley also enjoyed a 1-0 win over the Bucks at The Citadel last season thanks to a Tom Allan header.
