Farsley Celtic Women travelled down the M62 to take on Huddersfield Amateur in their first league action of 2024 on a bitterly cold January day with a full squad and a clear target for the rest of the season.
Nothing less than victory would do and with a nearly full squad to choose from, it was the best possible circumstances to be visiting a Huddersfield Amateur side who we had beaten on the opening day of the season.
We started brightly in the winter sun and with just 4 minutes on the clock we had taken the lead with Imogen Nichols getting on the end of a searching pass from Shirley Murphy to tuck it away and put us ahead.
Soon after it was 2-0 after Murphy got her obligatory goal after some brilliant build up play and it would have been more before the break if not for some inspired play by the Huddersfield goalkeeper who made a number of cracking saves to keep them in the game.
The second half was a more balanced affair but we managed to extend our lead further when a ball into the penalty area was diverted past their own keeper by a Huddersfield defender.
Despite a few more good chances to boost our advantage it remained 3-0 until full time and we came home with three points which were even sweeter after hearing that second placed Leeds Hyde Park had lost against runaway league leaders Ilkley Town and reduced our gap to just 5 points with a game in hand.
Coming up next we host Hall Green United at The Citadel on Sunday 21st of January and we hope to see you there!
The women’s team are also hosting a fundraising pub quiz night at The Nest Bar on Friday 16th of February. Tickets can be purchased from Sue at 07715877665 or via Eventbrite if you search Farsley Celtic Women. More details can be found on our social media channels!
