We are thrilled to announce the arrival of left back George Smith!

The Barnsley born man came through the ranks at his hometown club and would go on to make 44 appearances for the Tykes between 2014 and 2016 in League One before joining Gateshead.

He would go on to be a staple of the Gateshead team, making 38 appearances for the National League side in the 2016/17 season, scoring his first professional goal before making the step up back into League One to join Northampton Town.

Also having represented Chesterfield, Dover Athletic, Boston United, Darlington and Harrogate Town, George is known for his dynamic attacking play and robust defending

Pav Singh, Director of Football said: “George is a top player, a true professional both on and off the pitch. He brings with him a wealth of experience at higher levels than this, and has an excellent understanding and reading of the game.

“When we found out that George was available, myself and the chairman could not have moved any faster to make sure we secured his signature!”

Chairman Paul Barthorpe said: “On the pitch George is one of the standout left backs at this level. His ability to not only defend but to offer an attacking threat gives the team multiple formation options.

“One of the things that really stood out for me was George’s passion and his understanding of the game and love for the area.

“Off the pitch he is the type of guy that loves interacting with fans, and being involved in the social side of things. He typifies not only the type of player we want at our club, but also the type of person!”
