A young Farsley Celtic side suffered a 5-0 defeat to Scarborough Athletic in the Friday night fixture at the Tarmac Silverlands Stadium
The Seadogs built up a two goal advantage in the first half through Richie Bennett and Alex Brown, before goals from Dom Tear, Luca Colville and another from Bennett in the final ten minutes.
The game got off to a fairly even start with neither side coming close to breaking the deadlock within the opening 15 minutes, with Farsley’s first shot on target coming from Sam Fielding from a free-kick; an easy save in the end for Whitley in goal.
It would be the visitors however who would go on to take the lead on the 20 minute mark when a cross met the free head of Ritchie Bennett who guided the ball into the bottom corner; the flag staying down much to the dismay of the Farsley defence.
Farsley, managed by Clifton Robinson for the evening, fought hard against the more experienced Scarborough and managed to craft an opening for Robbie Fox a few moments later whose sweet-struck volley stung the palms of Ryan Whitley.
Sam Fielding also nearly managed to level for Farsley as he charged through the heart of the Scarborough midfield before seeing his effort blocked with Justin Iwobi free to his left.
Moments later, Scarborough doubled their lead when Brown’s strike from the edge of the area was deflected; wrong-footing Kieran Flavell in goal to give the Celts a mountain to climb in the peak district.
Farsley were boosted by the appointment of former Leeds United Manager Neil Redfearn, announced moments before kick-off, and his words at half-time in the dressing room certainly looked to have inspired the young Farsley side.
The Celts were on the front foot for the beginning of the second half as they went in search of a goal to get them back in the game; Rudy Misambo’s effort from a corner and Aiden Walker’s shot from inside the area, ultimately flagged for offside, showed an improvement from the first half.
However, it would be the Seadogs who would score the next goal as Dom Tear finished from inside the penalty area, killing any momentum the Celts had built up.
Jonathan Greening’s side would then go on to put the result beyond any doubt with goals from Colville and Bennett inflating the score to a heavy 5-0.
Farsley are back at the Tarmac Silverlands Stadium next weekend as they take on Warrington Town in Neil Redfearn’s first match in charge of the Celts.
