Clayton Donaldson’s post-match thoughts on our 3-0 win over Marine FC at the Marine Travel Arena.

Q: Clayton, a 3-0 win away at Marine, you must be delighted with that result.

A: “Yeah, very pleased with the result. On Saturday we were quite disappointed to not get anything from the game despite performing well in the second half. I just thought that if we carried that performance through into the game tonight then we’d do well.

“After that first half, to go in 3-0 up. The boys worked tirelessly and as a team I thought we won more battles. We lost a lot of those in the first half against Buxton but tonight every single one of them won their individual duels.

“So I’m very pleased with the way in which we both started and finished the game. Second half we were playing with the wind so the ball held up for them to get in behind like we tried to do in the first half so it was a case of dealing with that. We did that a lot better than we did on Saturday.

“We were magnificent from front to back.”

When asked about how clinical the Celts were in front of goal at Marine, Clayton said: “Again very pleased with that.

“I thought all three goals were fantastic. I’m delighted for Bailey (Sloane) to get his goal. We’ve been working with him on trying to get into the box and today he’s got himself on the scoresheet.

“For DJ (Campton-Sturridge) as well I’m very happy. Obviously he wasn’t as involved in the first two fixtures so for him to then come in and perform like that, it’s what we want.

“We’ve got a really great squad where everyone has a chance of starting so I thought it was a great time to utilise that tonight and like I say he’s come in and done really well for his goal, anticipating the mistake.

“The same for Daz (Darren Stephenson) as well. Getting in there and reaping the rewards. The work ethic from all the boys was fantastic today and that’s exactly what we want to see and it’s what’s got us the result.”

When asked about the performance of those earning some of their first minutes in the squad today, Clayton responded with: “Yeah I think it’s vital to get everyone involved. Playing away from home at the best of times is difficult but this is our third in a row, all on 3G as well which again is going to take its toll.

“A few of the boys were feeling it a bit from Saturday so we thought it was time to freshen it up and like I say when you’ve got players on the bench or in the squad that you can seemlessly put in and have faith in it makes my job a lot easier.

“Those who have came in today have performed magnificently. So we’ll look at that now for the weekend and see where we go from here.”

And finally, speaking on the Scarborough fixture at the weekend, Clayton said: “Yeah again another away game and another match played on a 3G pitch. Scarborough have started well, they won tonight as well but at the same time we fancy our chances.

“We did well against them in the league last season so we want to try and carry that momentum on into the game on Saturday.

“It’ll be tough and a good game for the neutral but one we’re definitely looking forward to.”
