Windy conditions in Castleford were an improvement over last weekend’s weather but that is about as good as it got in terms of improvement for Farsley Celtic.
The opening to the game was a cagey affair, both sides created chances but neither keeper was overly troubled with efforts from Shirley Murphy and Emma O’Hanlon bringing straightforward saves in what turned out to be golden opportunities for the Celts.
With five minutes to go before the break, Shirley Murphy broke the deadlock with the first touch of quality on the relatively dour affair. Cutting in from her position on the left wing, Murphy curled a fantastic effort into the top corner that had the travelling Celts on their feet in celebration.
The joy was not to be long-lived as Wyke got straight on the attack and equalised pretty much straight from the kick off. It was a disappointing moment that seemed to be a catalyst for the next few minutes of madness.
A Wyke player was given a shock red card for an off the ball incident that was missed by most in attendance. Neither side seemed to believe it was a red but what could have been a golden opportunity for Farsley to take control turned into a sign of things to come.
Going into the break all square, Farsley were quickly on the attack and created chances for Evie Smith to go close, but it was Wyke who scored next after a long ball forward was poorly dealt with at the back and a nice finish from the striker gave the away team the lead.
Farsley started to control possession after this but ultimately did not create many clear cut chances, with plenty of opportunities from distance creating easy work for the Wyke goalkeeper who had a very strong display to keep her team in front.
Late in the game a second red card was produced, this time for a second yellow card, but the 9 players of Wyke held on to claim a well-deserved victory.
Next up for Farsley Celtic Women is the visit of Skipton Town, who gained a narrow victory over us in September, to Castleford Academy.
