Farsley Celtic suffered a heavy defeat on the road at Scunthorpe United as the Celts were hit for six at the Attis Arena
Farsley were left to rue mistakes throughout the encounter with the hosts scoring three goals either side of half time.
The Celts started the better of the two sides and came closest to breaking the deadlock within the opening five minutes after Danny Greenfield curled a free kick over the wall as well as the bar.
However despite Farsley’s early control, it was the home side who took the lead just after the ten minute mark when Danny Whitehall headed in from a long throw-in after the Celts failed to clear their lines.
The Iron then began to turn the screw and almost doubled their lead through former Leeds United defender Tyler Denton when his volley was fired narrowly past the far post.
Moments later and Scunthorpe made it two. Callum Roberts took the ball in midfield and after driving forwards fired a hopeful shot towards goal from distance which found its way through Tom Wooster and into the back of net to give Farsley a mountain to climb.
Wooster was then called into action again on the 20 minute mark to deny Roberts from a free-kick from the edge of the area after the goalkeeper conceded the foul and yellow card, moments before Brad Nicholson headed wide from inside the area.
Greenfield was Farsley’s most dangerous threat going forward and he had another sight at goal when his strike from range forced the Iron goalkeeper down to his left to palm it wide and out for a corner.
Five minutes before the break and the home side had their third. Roberts was involved again before an eventual half volley from Denton inside the area found its way into the back of the net after ricocheting off of Sam Fishburn.
There was an opening for Tom Allan late in the half when he met a corner at the back post however he couldn’t keep his header down and Farsley went into the break at the Attis Arena three goals down.
Farsley came out better in the second half and substitute Dylan Youmbi was immediately involved when he layed the ball off to DJ Campton-Sturridge whose shot from the right side of the box forced the save before Bailey Sloane’s strike from the edge of the penalty area sailed narrowly over the bar.
The home side continued to look for a fourth to put the result beyond doubt and they thought they had done just after the hour mark when former Celts man Carlton Ubaezuonu curled a left-footed effort from inside the area just wide of Wooster’s left post.
Strikes from distance continued to be a dangerous weapon throughout the evening for Scunthorpe and Whitehall almost secured his brace when his low-driven strike fizzed past the post with 20 minutes left to play.
Moments later and Whitehall was given a golden opportunity to secure his brace after going down extremely softly in the box under a challenge from Sam Fielding. Up stepped Whitehall to send Wooster the wrong way and make it four for the Iron.
Farsley then came the closest they had so far to getting on the scoresheet with ten minutes left to play when Manny Mampala’s superb curling strike rattled the post before the ball was eventually cleared by the hosts.
Scunthorpe then claimed their fifth and sixth goals in the final ten minutes to cap off a heavy defeat on the road for Farsley which sees the Celts slip to 16th in the table.
Farsley are next in action at the weekend when Pav Singh’s side take on Darlington at the Tarmac Silverlands Stadium in Buxton.
