Wythenshawe, who ply their trade in the Northern Premier League Division One West, gave the Celt Army an early shock when on 17 minutes, Nick Hepple was given too much time which allowed him a free shot on goal, but his effort rebounded off the post before being cleared.

Farsley hit back and on 24 minutes, left-back Bailey Sloane almost grabbed the first goal of the contest but his shot fired into the side-netting under pressure from an on-rushing defender.

The key moment of the game came nine minutes later when a perfect through-ball from Ben Atkinson slipped in Stephenson and the forward kept his nerve to slot the ball past Greg Hall, for his third FA Cup goal of the campaign.

Tom Wooster made his first key save of the contest four minutes before the interval as he got down well to deny Isaac Abankwah’s header before then saving well from Hepple’s shot in the early encounters of the second half.

The Farsley woodwork was rattling for a second time on 76 minutes when Luke Nock’s powerful free kick clipped the top of the crossbar – Wythenshawe were beginning to dominate now.

Then on 84 minutes, George Boyd, a former FA Cup finalist with Hull City in 2014, was denied by another top save from Wooster.

And the Farsley goalkeeper pulled off a fourth key save just into stoppage time, this time denying Danny Edward’s free-kick before the substitute shot just wide of the goal from the resulting corner.

Farsley will be in Monday’s fourth qualifying round draw for the first time in 17 years, with National Leagues joining the fray meaning the club are just 90 minutes away from appearing in the First Round proper for almost two decades.
