Report: Farsley Celtic 2-1 Ossett Town

Farsley will visit The Shay in early November after progressing in the West Riding County Cup following Tuesday night’s 2-1 win over Ossett Town.

With the match looking destined for a penalty shootout, substitute Rhys Jenkinson sealed the tie late on, with his first senior goal for the club.

An own goal from Steven Jeff had given Farsley the lead inside the opening ten minutes but were pegged back on 56 minutes as Mitch Hamilton headed home the equaliser.

But teenager Jenkinson pounced on a Tom Morgan’s parry to clinch the win with just a minute left on the clock.

The victory sets up a second round tie at FC Halifax Town, which will be played in early November.

A near-monsoon downpour before the match had put the encounter in doubt, but with the rain easing off as kick-off arrived, the green light was given by referee Gareth Mellor.

And the Celts netted an early lead on nine minutes as Lewis Nightingale stormed down the left before squaring, but before the ball could reach a blue shirt, Jeff came sliding in to put the ball in his own goal.

Nightingale could have made it 2-0 on the 26th minute mark after Osborne had drawn both a defender and Morgan out of his goal, however the winger could only find the side-netting.

Ossett sought a route back into the game 11 minutes into the second half. Josh Grant lifted out of a challenge and the ball was then played out right to Chris Ovington, who lifted into the centre which allowed sub Hamilton to nod home.

The Celts almost hit back three minutes later when Kyle Hancock cut the ball into the box to Jenkinson, but the former Bradford City trainee’s effort clipped the bar.

The bar then came to Farsley’s rescue as Ovington attempted an ambitious effort from a free-kick from 30 yards on 71 minutes.

The woodwork was rattled again on 83 minutes as Farsley almost pinched the lead. Grant had played a low ball in from the left which left Nightingale with a great opportunity to net from a few yards out, but with the goal gaping, his effort clipped the foot of the upright.

But the winner did arrive on 89 minutes when the ball was played in from the left again and after Morgan had parried the initial effort, Jenkinson reacted the fastest to turn in the rebound.
